Eurovia | Celebrating sustainable practice in Responsible Business Week
Eurovia UK is marking Responsible Business Week 2018 by celebrating sustainable practice across our businesses.
Our strategy is focussed on the delivery of our sustainability commitments in terms of our social, economic and environmental performance, along with our wider business responsibilities and governance. As such, responsible business is an integral part of the way we work and robustly embedded in everything we deliver.
Eurovia UK is part of a global business that has pioneered numerous innovations that are paving the way for a sustainable future.
New processes that will transform the way we live are already being rolled out in many parts of the world, pioneered by our partners. These include projects that capture the sun’s thermal energy using road surfaces, so that it can be stored and used to heat homes and infrastructure, and the use of plant-based fuel for asphalt production.
One of Eurovia UK’s key aims is to achieve a zero waste to landfill ambition – supporting a truly circular economy, where one person’s waste is another’s resource.
A key component of this is the ability to transform by-products, previously considered as waste, into material suitable for creating long-lasting highways solutions.
Many of these were on display at the recent open day at Worcestershire Highways Recycling Centre where visitors were shown a range of innovations, such as how quality pothole repairs are now able to be carried out around the clock using hot mix recycled asphalt.
Visitors were also shown a pioneering in-depot treatment being developed for gully waste which renders it inert through the elimination of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) using a specialist drier.
Dave Rowley, Regional Director of Ringway Term Services West, said improved sustainability and responsibility are some of the benefits enjoyed by Eurovia UK businesses working together.
“We have a proven track record of being able to provide this service, in-house, to our clients. Sustainable service delivery; recycling and reuse, is a key part of what we offer because of the unique way in which we deliver services, contracting and production within the one business.”
Dave is keen that more people are made aware of the new innovations that are transforming the way in which our roads are constructed, maintained and repaired.
“Events like our Recycling Demonstration Day are an important way of showing people just what we are capable of doing and the quality of the recycled products that can be produced within one organisation.
“It is one thing to read about sustainability, but seeing it in action, in your local community, is very different. It brings it to life when somebody comes to one of our recycling plants and sees for themselves not only how we are able to turn waste into quality materials, but also how this saves our clients’ money and protects the environment, year in year out.”
Eurovia UK also plans to increase its engagement with suppliers to further our commitment to responsible business. For example, this month has already included a workshop to explore opportunities where alternative fuels could be used for plant and fleet, as well as how to deliver wider social benefits in the communities where we work.
This has already happened in many parts of the country where Eurovia UK staff members have joined forces with local community groups to volunteer in clean-up events.
These have often been coordinated by the company’s Corporate Responsibility (CR) Champions who liaise with local communities and take the lead on planning, implementing and recording responsible business activities within each business area.
All Eurovia UK employees are entitled to take up to two paid days each year to volunteer for a worthy cause, with examples ranging from a coast-to-coast vintage motorbike ride to providing practical help to ensure the smooth running of a scarecrow festival.
Responsible Business Week runs until 27th April 2018 and is an annual awareness campaign which celebrates the brighter side of business by sharing great responsible business success stories.
